Doro PhoneEasy 338gsm Goes Back to Basics
Doro is a very unique mobile phone manufacturer and here are the reasons why. First, this Sweden-based corporation eschews the latest technological innovations found in camphones, mobile Internet phones, and the ubiquitous smartphones by creating an extremely basic handset. Second, its simple and intuitive products cater to people with limited dexterity and the elderly, as evidenced by its back-to-basics mobile phone line launched in 2007.

Those who aren't aware of the two above factors will probably not realize the brilliance behind a Doro mobile phone's plainness. Then again, even people outside of Doro's target market would probably appreciate the straightforward functions of good old fashioned call quality, especially considering the Swiss-Army-Knife nature of today's cellphones.

Make no mistake. The 338gsm isn't a cheap and outdated piece of junk from the low end of a manufacturer's range of cellphone offerings (even though it's admittedly not the best product in Doro's new PhoneEasy series). This is actually a well-considered, delicately crafted tri-band phone that exudes minimalist quality and practicality.

SIM-free, it costs about £100, but it certainly doesn't look like a cheap knockoff, what with its sturdy and ergonomic plastic design that feels simple to handle and comfortable to touch. 16 millimeters of slimness and 95 grams of lightness make this phone as handy as they come, but it's not so small that it's easy to misplace. It's 125 x 53 millimeter frame assures that it won't ever be accidentally lost.

Much of the phone's sizeable frame is reserved for its keypad. Compared to the obsessive miniaturation that Sony Ericsson has been delving into lately, the 338gsm is gigantic. The large rectangles serving as number buttons proudly defy the current trend of shrinking mobile gadgets to the point of sacrificing usefulness. It's easy on your thumbs and they feature old-school click feedback when pressed. You can dial on it while it's still on your pocket—a feature that's virtually been lost in the advent of touch-screen smartphones.

Above the even bigger call start and stop buttons reminiscent of ancient Nokia phones is a button set aside for your address book (that can hold up to fifty names) and three large speed dial buttons (labeled as A, B, and C) for emergency contacts. The rest of the phone's functions are quite self-explanatory, which is yet another feature cellphone companies seem to have forgotten.

Anyhow, if you want a mobile phone that's as simple to use as a cordless phone or have no desire to pick up a smartphone that can double as a camera, palmtop, web browser, recorder, radio, clock, flashlight, GPS tracker, and cellphone, this is the product for you.
