| Firefox Extensions that Protect You While Surfing |
Safety while surfing has increasingly become an oxymoron—like safety while skydiving naked into a valley of broken glass or safety while riding an ATV. In fact, due to the continuing rise of Internet users, hackers are increasingly targeting browser vulnerabilities in order to gain access into systems.
Thankfully, Firefox users need not fret. The enterprising program has developed a system wherein people can download as many security extensions as needed to help increase their level of security from phishers, worms, viruses, trojans, spyware, malware, hackers, and so forth.
- BetterPrivacy provides you "better privacy" by protecting you against long-standing tracking cookies that cannot be deleted. The service helps you become conscious of these system-compromising objects and deletes them on your behalf. You can afterwards browse through those cookies and choose which of them you want to permanently remove.
- NoScript is a very useful extension that allows Java or JavaScript to execute only on trusted sites. Doing so allows you to stop clickjacking and cross-site scripting hacks from happening. Like the anti-popup button from way back, it sits on your status bar and lets you choose whether or not to block Java on the site you're visiting.
- BlockSite does exactly what it says on the tin. This extension gives you the choice of blocking a website that you think is dangerous or inappropriate for viewing by your family. It even lets you block all links leading to the sites you've already blocked that you might chance upon through search engine results. This is the perfect blacklist service that won't let you see the site you've blocked unless you take its URL off its list or disable the extension altogether.
- Dr. Web Anti-Virus allows you to check if any site you're browsing or any file you're downloading is installing viruses, spyware, worms, trojans, adware, and the like onto your machine. Just right-click on the file path or link and Dr. Web Anti-Virus automatically appears on the menu. Just open the extension and the link will be scanned to find out if there's any malicious software being injected into your PC.
It's worth noting that even if you have each and every one of these extensions listed here installed into your Firefox browser, you still won't be completely safe. Prudence and common sense must also be practiced in order for you to, say, avoid sites that aren't trusted sources or stop you from, for example, downloading unknown files. Eternal vigilance is the true solution to your surfing safety concerns.
