| Lenovo releases secure AES-encrypted USB |
Lenovo has just released the Lenovo ThinkPad USB Secure Drive. It comes in 160GB and 320GB capacities. These crypto disks come with a USB extension, a USB power cable, a carry pouch, and instructions. It boasts USB transfer rates of 33 mbps read and 30 mbps write.
Plugging the drive into a PC's USB port gives you only lighting status LED. You must log in using a six to 16-digit PIN, using the built-in numeric pad, for the PC to be able to access its contents. It no longer needs a driver once it's unlocked. An admin mode also lets you set access codes for up to 10 accounts.
The disk contains no cryptographic keys or PINs. All important related data is kept in its controller. The controller encrypts the disk using AES-128 algorithm, which has resisted all cryptological attacks to date.
All in all, Lenovo's latest ThinkPad USB Secure Hard Drive looks like a very secure data security product. You can order it online at Lenovo's UK web site. Prices start at £108.16 for the 160gb drive and £159.50 for the 320gb drive.
