LexisNexis belatedly warns 32,000 users of credit card fraud
Better late than never.

Despite it being a bit late, LexisNexis is currently alerting its users of possible fraud. The company informed its over 32,000 credit card users that their personal details (including their social security numbers) could be misappropriated by crooks who from LexisNexis' information retrieval service.

The theft, which took place any time between June 2004 and October 2007, was announced only recently by LexisNexis due to the prodding of the US Postal Inspection Service. The thieves presented themselves as business clients of LexisNexis and its brother company, ChoicePoint (their parent company, Reed Elsevier, bought ChoicePoint last year). They put up bogus mail boxes and misappropriated the data they got from the two companies to gain the users' credit cards.

According to the letter it sent to the 32,000 people whose information may be jeopardized, "These individuals were operating businesses that at one time were both ChoicePoint and LexisNexis customers." It turns out that this is not the first time that LexisNexis and ChoicePoint have experienced breaches. In 2005, their executives justified that because there is no law that requires them to reveal such occasions to their customers, they never did so -- till now.

The target of the latest breach was a company named Investigative Professions. CBS News reported that it was the same scammers behind this event. CBS News also reported that the suspect is a Nigerian Scam artist who purportedly made illicit transactions using the victims' credit cards.
