Microsoft notices fewer faults but highly severe

Security Intelligence Report of Microsoft has been released this week which noticed some new trends. The report says that the attacks have continued to drop as more hackers and researchers concentrate on finding issues in applications but not the operating systems.

The report consisted of all the data which the company has collected in the first six of 2008, and stated that the total number of vulnerabilities disclosed by researchers and hackers were equal in late 2006 and early 2007 and then reduced in the last months of 2007 and continue to reduce further in the first half of 2008. The total number of reported attacks got decreased but the number of issues which are severe have increased in the first half 2008

19 percent decrease in the disclosures is considered to be good news but the need for software risk management programs is high as more than 15 new software vulnerabilities continue to be disclosed on an average each day which cannot be considered good for the industry.

Microsoft's fifth edition of the security Intelligence Report is its latest one. The fourth edition of the report which was released in April has stated that the amount of malicious software's removed by Microsoft's tools increased to 40 percent in the last months of 2007, an increase can be seen in the latest report as well, where the total number of waste and malicious has raised to 43 percent.

According to the report the researchers have found less problems in operating systems than in the past. The report said more than 90 percent of faults affected applications.

The company also said that E-mail attacks have witnessed some major trends: Two file types--.html and .zip allotted for almost 98 percent of all blocked and malicious e-mail attachments.
