Online Safety Reassured with Harmful ISP Shutdown
Federal authorities from the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) had what they believed was the most notorious and threatening American-based web hosting service provider shutdown by persuading a judge that the ISP had actively joined in the spreading of malware, spam, viruses, trojans, child/violent/bestial/incestuous pornography, botnet commands and control servers, vulnerability exploits, and other offensive or dangerous material of that ilk.

In order to halt Pricewert's illegal activities, the court issued a temporary restraining order that prohibits the ISP from continuing its criminal actions and required its upstream servers and data centers to stop providing services to the malware hub. As of this writing, Pricewert has been completely erased off of the worldwide web, with the added bonus of the order freezing the syndicate's assets as well.

The FTC acquired the court order against Pricewert—an ISP also known by the name of APS Telecom or 3FN.net and had servers situated mostly in the San Jose area in California—on the 2nd of June. The order to pull the plug was released covertly to prevent the operators from tampering, hiding, or destroying evidence of their wrongdoings or finding new hosts to spread their menace with. According to the FTC's legal representatives, this was all needed considering the extreme nature of the materials hosted by Pricewert.

According to the FTC, Pricewert was also accused of promoting its dubious services through a forum created to aid communication between its lawbreaking clientele. Furthermore, the corporation also protected its customers by either shifting its criminal materials to other web protocol addresses it maintained to avoid discovery or by ignoring shutdown requests issued by the Internet security community.

The FTC further charges Pricewert with engaging in the deployment and use of botnets or huge system networks that have been hacked and compromised. Logs of instant messaging transcripts filed to the district court reveal the Pricewert senior executives' conversations about the configuration of botnets with so-called bot herders.

Under normal circumstances, the commission would have filed a complaint when it has enough grounds to substantiate that the law has been or is being broken or abused, and it appears to the commission that a hearing is in the best interests of the public. All the same, the FTC's alternative approach of indicting Pricewert of employing and conspiring with felons who are looking for ways to spread forbidden, dangerous, and malevolent electronic material all over the Internet worked as well.
