Bogus anti-virus threatens the online community

At present, millions of cash are swindled from the many trusting internet users by internet criminals with their promise of an anti-virus, which is definitely not genuine and is also counterfeited. This prompted McAfee, a well-known security firm, to issue its initial Consumer Threat Alert. This cautions the web users of the various problems that may occur when entertaining these rampant anti-virus scams.

According to McAfee, the Consumer Threat Alert allows the users to become more critical in order for them not to become targets of these criminals. Also, this security firm promises to become the observers of the widespread online scams and the information will then be made known to the internet users.

Online frauds made public

Web users are swayed into this deceptive feat through the ill-natured malware writers’ method of having a pop-up window of a security report, from a popular security firm, appear on the user’s browser. This will encourage the users to have their computers scanned for any lurking infections within the computer’s system. However, this process can be very dangerous since it is possible that a malware can enter through the system’s security and gather all personal data and credit card information stored in the affected computer.

Money-making scheme of internet assailants

Based on the statement made by François Paget, a senior virus research engineer at McAfee Avert Labs, these internet-based villains make quite a large amount of money through this process. A concrete example is the company named Innovative Marketing, which was able to gather about 180 million US dollars in one year using this kind of fraud. Approximately four million internet users were fooled and they bought the fake anti-virus software offered by the company.

Scareware alerts all throughout the world

Aside from the anti-virus scams, consumers must also be aware of the malicious commands found in the abundant screensavers and applications that are offered for free by unregistered distributors. Based on the reports, the number of occurrence of scareware increased four times during the past year.

Criminals online became wiser

It is true that there are individuals who are very much confident when making use of their computers. However, there are certain moments when these people become gullible to the web villains and they turn to be victims in the end. According to the senior vice president of McAfee Avert Labs, Jeff Green, these assailants have come up with more analytical methods in order to cheat on more users.
