| Facebook conspires with advertisers against users |
It was discovered in the recent reports that the popular social networking service Facebook has been collaborating with many online advertisers. The company was found to have been sharing numerous pieces of confidential information, which may be utilized to easily determine the names and locations of the Facebook users. This is considered as a perfect example of breach in Facebook’s policy for privacy.
Privacy is obviously violated by the company
It is a concrete agreement between the social networking site and its devoted users that any private information shared to Facebook will all be kept private. In addition, these data will never be shared to any unauthorized third-party without consent coming from the individuals concerned.
However, the promise for confidentiality was violated as broadcasted by the Wall Street Journal. Based on the published report, Facebook has been giving away sensitive data, which allows the advertisers to search for the profile pages of the registered users.
Lately, the smaller social network MySpace was discovered to have related problem as with their rival company. Still, the two leading websites promised that they were already working things out so as to avoid any occurrence of the sharing of private information.
Exchange of information truly occurs
The sharing of data occurs in such a way that the advertisers will obtain specific records when a user clicks on the web advertisement. This, in reality, is a very common online tactic nowadays.
But then, the reports sent by both social networks Facebook and MySpace include the URL that will direct an advertiser to the profile page of a certain registered individual. And what makes this totally unsafe is that most users place their real name or even their username on their profile pages.
No actions were done to battle this violation
Unfortunately, neither Facebook nor MySpace took necessary actions in order to avoid the disclosure of confidential data. Thus, they wind up in violating the privacy policy that they created for their users.
It was not long ago when Facebook received loads of complaints because the company has been falling short on providing a very strong security system. Another round of changes in the privacy settings will be scheduled just after the Facebook published the private information of their users.
