| Hacker of Sarah Palin’s webmail sentenced |
Sentence was given to the college student who gained illegal access into the Yahoo! Mail account of Sarah Palin, the vice-presidential candidate during the election, utilizing the data that can be seen in the open. The court found out that the alleged student was accountable for the two of the four other cases charged on him.
Charges were filed but the accused was guilty for few
Based on the latest news broadcasts, David C. Kernell was guilty of the following charges: the crime of obstructing justice and an offense of accessing a computer system without any permission. But then, he was cleared on the cases of wire fraud and also the use of another person’s identity.
However, there is still no confirmation from the federal prosecutors involved regarding the retrial of the very last case filed against Kernell, the son of a known Democratic official representing Tennessee.
Penalties are needed to be served
The punishment given to the convicted student will run for about 21 years of imprisonment. The longest number of years that Kernell will serve in the prison is 20 years and this is due to the case of obstructing justice. The college student erased all the files found on his hard drive, which could have been helpful in resolving the issue. The added year in prison was given to him due to his misconduct.
Need for justifying the actions
According to Kernell’s defense lawyer, this violation should only be considered as a hoax that is common among college students. In addition, the attorney believes that there is also no single ill intention when his client accomplished the said action.
As said by Kernell, he considered that the information he posted in the website were not damaging in any sense. The messages and pictures that he uploaded in the web were not harmful at all, he added.
Damage to one’s figure is a sensitive issue
The University of Tennessee student made the private information, which was stolen from Palin’s email, available at the 4chan website. But then, the federal prosecutors found the exploit as a grave matter since it involves ruining the vice-presidential candidate’s image during her campaign in 2008.
Based on the testimony during the court proceedings, it was found out that David Kernell gathered the necessary data in order to change the password of Palin’s webmail account and it took him 20 minutes to complete it.
During that campaign period, the Alaska governor was being suspected for utilizing her webmail as a means for communicating the supposedly official state matters.
