Second man found guilty on DDoS attacks

Another individual from the United States was found guilty and charged with imprisonment after the court hearings. He was responsible for the distributed denial of service attacks, which was carried out against the Church of Scientology about two years ago.
Equivalent fine for damages must be paid
The 20-year-old man named Brian Thomas Mettenbrink, who was based at Grand Island, Nebraska, was sent to prison for a whole year and he was also asked to give about 20,000 US dollars as payment for the damages caused to the Hubbardists. According to the latest news broadcasts, the sentence was handed over during a court trial held on Monday this week.
Reasons behind the DDoS attacks
The man responsible for the DDoS assaults already declared a guilty plea during the earlier part of the court trials. Mettenbrink explained that the attack was accomplished as a symbol of objection against the internet censorship being supported by the Church of Scientology. A loose banner of the Anonymous was also arranged for this specific event.
Utilization of methods for successful attacks
Brian Thomas Mettenbrink confessed, as part of his plea bargaining agreement, that he made use of the custom software taken from the message board, which is under the control of Anonymous. This action was done so as to send out worthless amount of traffic at the websites operated by the Church of Scientology.
Attacks occurred after a significant event
Mettenbrink executed the attack against the church right after it declared an order of removal of all the videos of Tom Cruise during an awards affair. Hence, in January of the year 2008, many of the websites managed by the Church was dominated one after another. This was the outcome of the malicious activities executed by Mettenbrink and his group.
Hate as grounds for a crime
According to the US District Judge Gary Feess, the online crime that was aimed at the Church of Scientology is related to what is considered as a “hate crime”.
Summing up, Mettenbrink is regarded as the second man convicted for a cyber attack. It was Dmitriy Guzner from Verona, New Jersey who first received a sentence of imprisonment a year ago in the month of November. This is after confessing that he took part in the attack that was done on the websites connected to Scientology.
