Twitter opposes any legal action against its users

The administrators of the micro-blogging website Twitter have been opposing the legal action being taken against them. The purpose of this movement is for the service to reveal the two registered Twitter users who updated their accounts with a message, which was found to be harmful to the high-ranked law enforcement official in Pennyslvania.
Based on the news broadcast from The New York Times, Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett sent a subpoena to the administrators of Twitter during the first part of this month demanding the micro-blogging service to expose the people behind the two accounts @casablancapa and @bfbarbie.
Complete violation of an individual’s freedom of speech
However, many support groups were against this legal demand such as the American Civil Liberties Union and Public Citizen Litigation Group. They believe that the action is an evident breach of an individual’s Free Speech rights.
In addition, they believe that the US Constitution stands to save individuals from harm. Based on the law, individuals have every right to take part in an anonymous speech. And, this is always advocated during countless of court trials.
User’s privacy is considered at all times
Even with the presence of the subpoena, the administrators of the micro-blogging service stated that they will not abide by the order. As said by Timothy Yip, the Legal Counsel of Twitter, the company will continue to guard the privacy of their users. And, they will divulge confidential data only in chosen cases.
According to Corbett’s spokesperson, the subpoena is actually intended for the forthcoming court hearing of Brett Cott. Cott’s punishment of 21 to 60 months of imprisonment was given on Friday of the previous week.
During the court trials, this person was discovered to be responsible for the three charges in Bonusgate, a known political scandal. But then Cott’s followers, who were all cleared on the rest of the 39 charges, believed that the court trial apparently has political origins.
This issue took place just when Yahoo! turned down the request from the Electronic Frontier Foundation for the company to disclose the identity of the user who labeled USA Technologies’ chief executive as a “known liar” who accepts the thought that “humanity exists to be fleeced” is nothing but true.
