| North Korea strengthening its online warfare? |
North Korea is reported to have created and to be strengthening an online military. Its main targets are reported to be the United States and South Korea.
A report in South Korean newspaper JoongAng Daily states that the North Korean People's Army has just recently formed an "online military" consisting of 100 hackers. This "online military" is purported to be the largest origin of online, global attacks on various US military websites.
The report made reference to government sources in its claims that the 100 hackers were trained to breach the networks of pertinent foreign websites and nab sensitive information. It also assumes that the "online military" unit is creating malicious programs that are designed to break down the IT systems of foreign states during a war.
Internet-based attacks against government infrastructure is not a novel idea. In fact, the US. has just recently experienced attacks on the systems that control its power grid. It was suspected that moles from Russia and China were responsible for these attacks, but China dismissed an involvement in the matter.
Cyber-based attacks manifested their usefulness during times of armed conflict among states. An example of such was when hackers in Russia were suspected to have worked on politically inspired security breaches into important government websites in Georgia and Estonia. |
