Data centre of IBM Warwick fails
A source reported that the data centre of IBM in Warwick, United Kingdom experienced a power failure last Thursday.

The unexpected occurrence led to a handful of systems of IBM's clients to be unavailable for a couple of hours. This data centre is crucial for hosting the applications needed by a large number of users.

Included in the roster of affected customers was Edwards Ltd., an internationally known developer of vacuum pump technologies specifically for precision engineering practices. The company picked IBM Global Technology Services' Applications on Demand as a host for its systems. Its SAP applications operated using IBM AIX on Power Systems servers, and were braced by IBM DB2 and an IBM storage area network employing a DS8000 array and Tivoli Storage Manager.

Meanwhile, according to IBM, its Warwick recovery centre is supported by totally continuous power supply (UPS) and generators.

A source reported that the power shortage happened at 2.20pm last April 30th and was succeeded by a generator outage. This made the power shortage period longer. This was further lengthened by the necessity to open systems in a regulated sequence. Hence, the "mission-critical systems" of IBM clients that are controlled by the data centre were paralyzed for hours.

A representative from IBM gave the company's side: "There was a short interruption to the power supply yesterday, which was quickly resolved. We are working closely with clients to resolve any outstanding issues."
