| Chinese-based hacking attack unleashed |
According to the latest study conducted by Canadian security researchers, a new targeted malware network, which is being maintained by China-based servers, appeared just recently. This malware has been found to have affected a number of computer systems such as those located in the Office of the Dalai Lama and the offices in the government of India. Various businesses and academic organizations were also affected by these online attacks. In addition to this, systems of the United Nations were also gravely impaired.
Nart Villaneuve, a researcher from the university at Toronto, quoted the most important portion of the latest technical report entitled, “Shadows in the Cloud”. He cited the part wherein it was said that as of today the infrastructures are considered to be more complicated and these are also created with different levels command-and-control.
Online services open gates for more hacking
With regards to the blog posted by Villeneuve, the web criminals continue to exploit various social networking services such as the Twitter and Google Groups. Blog sites like the Blogpot, Baidu Blogs, and blog.com were also included in the targeted websites. Even the popular webmail Yahoo! Mail was not saved from these widespread cybercrime. They do this in order to keep their command on the affected computers.
There is still no existing evidence considering the connection of the targeted attacks to the government of China. However, it was confirmed from a report that there is a connection among the network and two suspected persons residing in Chengdu. There was also a relationship between the system and the secret organization of Chinese hackers.
Stealing of important information becomes widespread
Shadowserver Foundation and its partner, Information Warfare Monitors, gathered information in order to present a valuable report. In their commentary, there had been innumerable cases with regards to stealing of documents that were considered and labeled as “secret” or “confidential”. A year ago, about 1,500 telegrams coming from the Office of Damai Lama were affected as well.
It was evident, as said by Villeneuve, that there was a connection with the kind of stolen data and the strategic interests of the government of China. However, it cannot be ascertained if there is a proof of an actual link among the hackers and the government. Still, it is not really impossible if the stolen documents are already in the hands of the members of the government of China.
But then, the government of China disagrees with the idea that they have been supporting the hacking activities online and that they were just being provoked in order to set off a bigger mess. Jiang Yu, spokeswoman of the foreign ministry of China, said that the government does not uphold any kinds of cyber crime like hacking.
